When recording vocals, selecting the right recording microphone is the key to your success.

A great recording microphone when recording vocals is pictured above. It is a Shure large diaphram condensor mike. It requires 48V phanthom power which is supplied by the Presonus Firewire USB interface that I use. Be sure to always check the recording levels to avoid clipping. You can always increase the amplitude within the recording software.
Some recording engineers like to use a compressor in line with the vocal microphone. If you have a singer with a powerful voice and little dynamic control this would be a must. I use a compressor with vocal microphones sparingly myself. When I do use a compressor, I do it within the mix as an add on. That way I can make the adjustments to get the weaker signals up out of the mix.
